Van Mieu to receive Memory of the World certificate

Ha Noi will hold a ceremony to receive the UNESCO’s certificate that include 82 stone steles at Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature) in the list of heritages recognized as the Memory of the World Register on February 25.

On the same day, the capital city will receive the certificate recognizing Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature), which is Viet Nam’s first university, as a special national relic.

A solemn ceremony, with the presence of leaders of Viet Nam and Ha Noi, and the UNESCO in Viet Nam, will re-enact traditional processions of laureates returning home to pay thanks to their ancestors after achieving academic honors. Read Visit Hanoi’s ancient Temple of Literature: Van Mieu

It will include the screening of documentaries featuring Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam, and special art performances.

The Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam Scientific Center on February 25 will hold a talk to re-assess values of the historical site.

The 82 stone steles which are preserved at Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam historical site were erected between 1484 and 1780 to record the names of the laureates of royal examinations held under the Le and Mac dynastiesroyal examinations held between 1442 and 1779. The steles vividly document the 300 years’ history of training and recruiting talented individuals for serving the natinal construction and defence in Viet Nam.

Van Mieu was built in 1070 and then became Viet Nam’s first university. Over 2 million people visit it each year, according to the center.
