My Son towers reopened for visitors after restoration

On June 22, the My Son Relic and Tourism Management Board opened Group G of the temple towers in the My Son sanctuary in Quang Nam province for visitors after over ten years of restoration.

A gallery exhibiting objects related to the group of towers was also opened the same day.

Restoration experts have discovered and restored more than 60 damaged objects, including the tops of the towers and God statues which were buried underground.

“The restoration of Group G in the My Son sanctuary has been conducted scientifically,” Le Thanh Vinh, head of the Institute for Conservation of Monuments under the Ministry for Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated.

“We found parts of the relic which were buried for a long time. Those objects offer exact information about My Son heritage as well as the scientific basis for the restoration of Cham ruins at the sanctuary.”

According to Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General, the result of the Group G restoration reflects the strength of the Italian- Vietnamese cooperation with the coordinator from UNESCO. In the near future, UNESCO will help the central province of Quang Nam to restore and protect local degraded relics.

Bokova is on a five-day working visit to Vietnam, which began June 19, to attend a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the 2003 Convention on Protecting World Intangible Cultural Heritages and to review the implementation of the UNESCO–Vietnam agreement signed in 2010. The director stated that UNESCO will continue assisting Vietnam in improving management ability and in dealing with new challenges in culture, education, heritage, climate change and biosphere reserves preservation.
