How much money does a person can carry, in foreign currencies and VND, upon their entry into and exit from Viet Nam?

According to Item 1 of Article 2 of Decision 15/2011/TT-NHNN of the State Bank of Viet Nam, dated August 12, 2011, Vietnamese people or foreigners can carry US$5,000 (or an equivalent sum in other foreign currencies) or VND15 million in cash upon entry into and exit from the country.

The Decision stipulates that individuals carrying a smaller amount of foreign currencies or Vietnamese dong shall also be required to declare to the border customs, upon their entry into or exit from Viet Nam.

The regulation is not imposed on individuals who carry means of payment or valuable papers in foreign currency or in Vietnamese dong, such as traveler’s cheques, bank card, savings book, securities and other valuable papers.

Decision 15/2011/TT-NHNN replaces Decision 921/2005/QĐ-NHNN of the State Bank of Việt Nam (SBV), dated on June 27, 2005 in which Vietnamese people or foreigners can carry US$7,000 or VND15 million in cash upon entry into and exit from the country./.
